Historical Tour 2008

If self driving, it is suggested you avoid the bus timetable which will be travelling from
station 1 to stations  3, 2, 4, 5, 7, 6 and 8.

Talks, which take about 15 minutes, will be repeated at the nominated times.

 

Stations

1.  Information Centre - Staring time: 1.30pm(bus)

Collect pamphlet and discuss tour with Annette Taylor or Lesley Turner, members of the Historical Society and long term residents.   

                 

2.  Ferry ramp

Meet Bruce Ripley who grew up in the area, and whose family was involved with local shipping. He will discuss access to Hawks Nest and the river, the ferry, the bridge, and the Fens.

Talk times:       1.30pm, 1.50pm(bus), 2.10pm, 2.20pm, 2.40pm and 3.00pm

 

3.  Moira Parade

Jan Winn, local historian and author, will talk about the area that was the centre of Hawks Nest social life at the turn of the 20th century.

Talk times:   1.30pm(bus), 1.50pm, 2.10pm, 2.20pm, 2.40pm and 3.00pm

 

4.  Ocean Beach

Rex Sargeant, Historical Society member and surf club historian, will talk about the beach, the surf club, the caravan park and the old pavilion.

Talk times:   1.30pm, 1.50pm, 2.10pm(bus), 2.20pm, 2.40pm and 3.00pm

 

5.  Jimmys Beach

Trevor Cook, an inaugural Historical Society member who wants local history safely and accurately recorded, will deal with the beach, Yacaaba, early discovery of the area and WWII .

Talk times:      1.30pm, 1.50pm , 2.10pm, 2.20pm(bus), 2.40pm and 3.00pm

   

6. Winda Woppa

Norm Cruikshank actually worked at the Birdwood Mill so will talk about the timber industry and early life at Hawks Nest.

7. Granny’s Pool

Ron Doyle, Historical Society member and avid historian, will talk about the hulks and wrecks, alum, skeletons, the river mouth, river transport and the peninsula.

8.  Lagoon walk

Len Robert’s has been a local Councilor for a number of years. He is President of the Historical Society and is an accredited archeologist. He will discuss the original inhabitants and the land formation of Myall Point and Corrie Island.                

Walk time: 3.30pm (approx. 30mins)
