Ride on the Wild Side: Registrations open soon
The “Ride on the Wild Side” Cycling Event will be held on Sunday 26th September 2010 as a standalone event together with the Yacaaba Dash at Hawks Nest.
The day promises to be fun for all, with three cycling routes on offer, a “Family-friendly Ride” around Hawks Nest and Winda Woppa, an intermediate ride to Little Gibber and an “Enthusiasts Ride” to the Myall Shores Eco Resort at Bombah Point.
Entry for adults is $2 with children riding free. Both rides depart at 9am from the Hawks Nest Surf Club and all participants receiving a Certificate of Participation. Registrations are open from 8.30 am. There will be separate registration desks for each ride category.
Chair of the Cycleway Task Force, Mr Adrian Ryan, said the day has been designed to promote the area to cyclists, raise awareness of the health and environmental benefits of cycling, and show off our beautiful scenery.
“Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens offer an ideal environment for cyclists, with mostly level terrain, quiet roads and interesting places to stop,” he said.
The Family Ride, “Ocean to Ocean” of about 6 km, caters for the whole family riding together. This ride will start and conclude at the Surf Club, where a BBQ will be operating to satisfy the hungriest appetite.
The Intermediate Ride, "Ocean to Little Gibber" of about 30 km is for those who like to try to push themselves alittle further. Starting at the Surf Club the ride will extend to half way along Mungo Brush Road where the Lions Club will have the BBQ ready for a sausage sandwhich and drink to provide a much earned energy pickup. Transport can be arranged for those who do not wish to ride back to Hawks Nest Surf Club
The Enthusiasts Ride – “Ocean to Lakes” is designed for the more advanced riders starting from the Surf Club along Mungo Brush Road through the Myall Lakes National Park to finish 25 km away at the Myall Shores Eco Resort. A BBQ lunch will also be available at the Resort to satisfy those hunger pangs. Although must enthusiasts seem to find the energy to ride back to Hawks Nest, making the trek 55 km in total, transport can be arranged for those who do not wish to cycle back to the starting point at the Hawks Nest Surf Club.
News of the Ride is already attracting much interest, and entry forms will be available mid 2010 for downloaded. Early submission of forms will assist the organisers to prepare for the BBQ lunches.
Attractive accommodation packages have been put together by both the Myall Shores Eco Resort and Oceanside Motel in Hawks Nest. Please refer to our accommodation section for more details.
A grant from the Roads and Traffic Authority to assist with the cost of promoting the event (as part of the RTA’s Bike Week) has been awarded to the event’s organisers, which will ensure the event can be promoted outside the region.
